About the Scheme

Tamil Nadu’s government housing FREE 5 Lakhs Scheme has continued across different administrations, with each government introducing its own name while maintaining the common objective of providing permanent housing to economically weaker families. During the Tamilnadu past leadership of Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi, the scheme was known as the Kalaignar Veedu Vazhangum Thittam. Later, under the leadership of J. Jayalalithaa, it was implemented as the Amma Housing Scheme (Amma Veedu Thittam). Under the current administration by Chief Minister C Joseoh Vijay, the scheme has been introduced as the Vetri Veedu Thittam.

Although the scheme’s name has changed over time, its primary goal remains the same—to help eligible families build safe and permanent homes. One of the major improvements in the latest version of the scheme is the increase in financial assistance. The maximum housing loan amount has been enhanced to ₹5,00,000, enabling beneficiaries to construct better-quality houses and manage rising construction costs more effectively.

The enhanced financial support is expected to make home ownership more affordable for low-income families and improve the overall standard of housing across Tamil Nadu.

• Scheme Purpose: Vettri Veedu Thittam is a Tamil Nadu Government housing initiative exclusively for families living in kutcha (temporary) houses, with the goal of creating a hut-free Tamil Nadu by providing permanent (pucca) homes to eligible beneficiaries.
• Financial Assistance: The financial support under the scheme has been increased from ₹3.10 lakh to ₹5.00 lakh for the construction of each pucca house, enabling beneficiaries to build stronger and better-quality homes.
• First-Year Target: In the first phase, the Government aims to construct 70,000 houses, with an estimated project cost of ₹3,500 crore.
• Implementing Department: The scheme will be implemented by the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department, which will conduct a fresh door-to-door survey to identify eligible beneficiaries.
• Budget Announcement:Vettri Veedu Thittam was announced in the Revised Budget Estimates 2026–27, presented on 5 August 2026, marking the first Budget of the new Tamil Nadu Government.

Eligibility Criteria for
Vettri Veedu Thittam

Homeless or Living in a Kutcha House: The applicant must either be homeless or currently living in a kutcha (temporary or thatched) house that requires replacement with a permanent dwelling.

Economically Weaker Families: The scheme is intended for economically disadvantaged and low-income families who require financial assistance to construct a safe and permanent home.

Ownership of Land: The applicant must own a suitable piece of land in their name or be legally eligible to construct a house on the land where the new home will be built.

No Previous Housing Scheme Benefit: The applicant must not have previously received financial assistance or a house under any earlier Tamil Nadu Government housing scheme for the construction of a permanent house.

Application Process

• Contact Authority: Applicants can obtain the Vettri Veedu Thittam application form from the Village Panchayat Office, Taluk (Tahsildar) Office, or the Block Development Office (BDO).
• Document Verification: Submit copies of your identity proofs, income certificates, and land patta.
• Gram Sabha Approval: Your application details will be presented for validation and approval at the local Gram Sabha
• Geo-Tagging: Government officials will visit your current dwelling to take photographs and complete geo-tagging of the land. Once approved, funds are disbursed directly to your bank account in installments.
